Crowns-and-Bridges

What are Dental Crowns?

Think of a crown as a tailored cap for your tooth. Though it is a small structure, when it is placed properly and taken care of, a crown can last for many years. Here at Township Dental, our dentist near you, Dr. Vik Boparai, can examine your smile and may advise this particular treatment if you’re dealing with:

  • Broken teeth
  • A cavity that’s too large for a filling
  • Worn-down teeth
  • Severe discoloration
  • To protect a tooth that’s had a root canal

Porcelain is the most popular restoration material; not only is it does it blend in with your smile seamlessly, but it is resislient against daily wear.

At least two visits to our Langley office are required to fit a crown. Dr. Boparai will begin by removing any decay and then shape the tooth to fit it with a temporary structure. During a subsequent appointment, we will fit the permanent crown over your tooth, solidifying it in place with dental cement. Final adjustments will be done before you go.

What are Dental Bridges?

Every one of your teeth play a critical role when it comes to communicating, eating, and maintaining proper smile alignment. Tooth loss doesn’t necessarily occur just because of aging, but if you do lose teeth, they must be replaced to maintain your mouth’s function. Fortunately, you can acquire a dental bridge to achieve this.

A bridge is a unique structure containing an artificial tooth (pontic) and two crowns (abutments). The pontic fills in the gap in your smile while the abutments fasten onto your neighboring teeth, anchoring the bridge in position.

Upon examining your smile, Dr. Boparai can recommend one of two types of bridges:

  1. Fixed – Also called permanent bridges. They are secured in place by bonding the abutment crowns directly to teeth or by attaching the pontic to the surrounding teeth.
  2. Removable – This bridge is bonded to your smile with metal clasps or precision attachments.

Gold alloys, non-precious alloys, porcelain, or a combination of these materials can be used to design your bridge.

Having a dental bridge placed takes two or three appointments. When you first come into Township Dental, we will prepare your adjacent teeth by etching off a very small amount of enamel; this ensures the bridge can bond properly. Like with crowns, impressions are taken so the structure fits you. It takes several weeks for a permanent one to be made, and when it is, you’ll need to come back to our clinic to acquire it.

A strict brushing and flossing regimen will keep dental restorations and surrounding teeth clean. This is of critical importance since each prosthetic relies on the neighboring teeth for support.
